Electric Mobility Action Day (AtEm - Aktionstag Elektromobilität)

Carrying out a Car-Free Day event by closing one or more streets to traffic, and opening it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. This should preferably happen on 22 September to mark your town or city as part of World Car-Free Day.
Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
On the occasion of the First Car-free-Day in Stuttgart that will be organized under the title "Theo - autofrei", the municipality will close the main federal artery "Theodor-Heuss-Straße" with a length of one kilometer. The street festival will take place on 22 September between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm covering a large variety of activities. They range from information booths on cycling and pedestrian mobility, a safety bike training parcour for kids and a cargo-bike roadshow to Parklets and street art. The event talkes place in close coperation with the Electric Mobility Action Day (AtEm) which is also organized by the City of Stuttgart on the same day. It is foreseen to organize the car-free day yearly and to enlarge the area of the event for the editions of the coming years.
Implementing one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.
Permanent measures implemented this year:
New or improved bicycle facilities
  • Improvement of bicycle network (creation of new lanes, extension, renovation, signposting etc)
  • Develop public bicycle hiring and sharing systems
  • Improvement of bicycle facilities (parking, locks etc)
  • Installation of charging points for e-bikes
Pedestrianisation
  • Create or enlarge pedestrian streets
  • Improvement of infrastructure (new foot bridges, pavements, road crossings, zebra crossings etc)
  • Other: Creation of a new map of the city centre for pedestrians
Public transport services
  • Improvement and extension of the public transport network (creation of HOV lanes for public transport modes, new stops, new lines, reserved areas etc)
  • Improvement and extension of the public transport services (express services, increase frequency etc)
  • Use of ecological vehicles for public transport fleets
  • Development of new technologies to improve public transport
