Detailed description (English): According to the WHO’s figures on air quality, Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most polluted countries in the world and is within the top three countries for mortality linked to air pollution. The two main contributors to this situation are the use of coal and wood for heating in inefficient stoves and the increasing number of vehicles, especially diesel, which account or 80% of the fleet.
The event will be opened by Edin Forto (Prime Minister of the Canton of Sarajevo), Adnan Šteta (Minister of Transport of the Canton of Sarajevo), and Khaldoun Sinno (Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina). The Prime Minister will then lead a panel discussion on how to tackle the issue of air quality and transport with experts in the field. This discussion will be followed by panel presentations on the topics of walking, cycling, and public transportation
Target group(s): Key stakeholders from public institutions, civil society, academia, public and private companies.
Objectives: Provide a public forum to discuss the issue of air quality and transport in Sarajevo with the Canton and experts from the field.
Expected Outcomes: The event is expected to have ca. 50-60 attendees and coverage through local media. It will provide an opportunity to strengthen the public awareness for the issue of air quality and foster the alignment of different approaches to tackle the problem.
