Detailed description (English): "A more cycling city with a greater safety, more bicycle lanes that connect the residential neighborhoods to the city center, and more events like this", were the wishes that the mobility councilor, Miguel Gaspar announced during the celebrations of World Bicycle Day, on June 3. The World Bike Day was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, last April 12, highlighting the advantages of cycling for health and the environment.
For that reason, hundreds of cyclists took part in two bicycle tours around the city, the XXVI Lisboa Antiga, which ended at Cais do Sodré, and the Tour of the Museums.
At the Cais do Sodré, the journey was full of activities, including concerts, gymnastics, bicycle workshops, rickshaw, street food, demonstrations and other activities dedicated to this transport mode that the United Nations says is accessible, easy, sustainable and promotes the preservation of the environment.
According to Miguel Gaspar, "we are witnessing a paradigm shift and more and more, we see people changing their habits and using the bicycle as a means of transportation to go to work, take their children to school, do their shopping in commerce centres, etc. The idea that Lisbon is not a cycling city is becoming even more distant. We are working towards greater security, expanding the bicycle network and we hope to reach the end of the mandate by reaching the goal of 200 km of cycling lanes throughout the city. "
This marks the first of many World Bicycle Days.
