Detailed description (English): MDAT participates as partner in the Interreg MED project 'REgenerating mixed - use MED urban communities congested by traffic through Innovative low carbon mobility sOlutions', as known as 'REMEDIO'. The project aims at strengthening the capacity of cities to use low-carbon transport systems and include them in their mobility plans by testing existing mobility solutions, through an assessment tool and participatory governance schemes that result in an operational path replicable by other MED urban areas with different city sizes. It addresses the challenge of the high density areas surrounding the city centres with commercial and directional roads often suffering from traffic jam to the point of becoming wounds in the connectivity of the wide spread city and elements of additional economic crisis and even social exclusion. For such congested roads, 'REMEDIO' proposes to transform them into “horizontal condominiums”, forms of participatory governance that actively engage institutions, stakeholders and citizens and with which the Municipality can directly interact to improve multi-modal and low-carbon mobility, freight logistic and environmental quality. 'REMEDIO' also implements concrete actions to relieve traffic congestion in Loures (PT), Treviso (IT), Split (HR) and Seville (ES), where territorial institutions, supported by research/technical partners, are involved as beneficiary partners and can put in place adaptation measures for improving the sustainability of urban mobility plans. Under this framework, MDAT organises a MOBILITY ACTION and wants to become a part of the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK campaign.
The pilot area proposed for 'REMEDIO' project (Ethn. Antistaseos-Vas. Olgas-Vas. George-Man. Andronikou), is one of the axes that brings the traffic into the city centre. More specifically, as far as the MOBILITY ACTION it has been selected a part of this pilot axis where the problem of the illegal parked cars is more extensive and the vast majority of the bus lines are passing through, thus the area defined the street between 28th October and Evzonon.
This campaign focuses on informing the citizens about the mobility/environmental problems they cause when they use their private cars and especially how to inform the public how they affect the mobility in the axis when they park illegally. The campaign also, proposes alternatives ways of reaching the city centre other than using private cars and selecting more environmental friendly ways, such as taking the public transport, car sharing, walking and cycling.
A campaign titled 'Redesigning the Road Together - We stop only where we do not disturb others', has been organised on 21 September from 12:00 -14:30, with the support of the Department of Volunteerism, Youth and Administrative Assistance of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
Target group(s): The target group was the residents of the axis, the people that are working in this part of the axis or are moving through the axis in order to reach the city centre.
Objectives: Raise public awareness and prevent illegal parking and double parking in the pilot axis, indirect effect to increase the number of employees, residents, company owners of the area using alternative mobility ways, more environmental friendly.
Expected Outcomes: Change the public attitude about the means they select to move in the axis and prevent illegal parking and double parking though the axis
Partner: Municipality of Thessaloniki.
