Activities within the week Activities within the week

Glasgow organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2006, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
The actions are aimed at raising general awareness of the links between transport and climate change. This will help individuals to make an informed decision about the impact of their personal transport choice upon climate change.

The commuter challenge illustrates and compares the implications of different transport modes for climate change and this message will be reinforced through marketing associated with each separate EMW event.

Permanent measures Permanent measures

Glasgow implements one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.

Car-free day Car-free day

Glasgow carries out a Car-Free Day 2006 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
There are two zones restricted to the private car during EMW:

1. Temporary closure of Ferndale Court between 7am and 4pm on Tuesday 19th September 2006 outside Parkview Primary School (in the Glasgow suburb of Summerston). The carriageway will be covered with artificial turf to launch the School’s new Travel Plan and to allow the children to enjoy a traffic free environment with fun activities taking place in the traffic free street space.

2. Closure of Candleriggs, Wilson Street and Bell Street in the Merchant City (Glasgow city centre) on Friday 22nd September 2006 5am to midnight. The road space will be used to accommodate a street market as part of the Merchant City Festival, allowing the public to appreciate the Merchant City’s public realm in a traffic free environment.
