Pedestrianised main street in Dorchester on 22/9

Dorchester implements one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.

Pedestrianisation
Create or enlarge pedestrian streets
The information on the model town pump will encourage people to walk.
Accessibilities
Enlargement of pavements

Car-free day Car-free day

Dorchester carries out a Car-Free Day 2007 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
The southern third of South Street in the town centre will be closed to all traffic from 9am to 5pm on 22 September. A children's roundabout will be set up in this part of the street to demonstrate how much safer and pleasanter this part of the town's main shopping street would be if "pedestrianisation" were to be made permanent. The Dorchester Transport and Environment Plan includes "pedestrianisation" of Lower South Street but no date has been set for its implementation. We hope this exercise will serve to hasten permanent pedestrianisation.
