Activities within the week Activities within the week

Östersund (City of Östersund) organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2007, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
Almost all actions initiated during the week are related or have a connection to the “Streets for people”-theme. The most noticeable actions are the restriction of traffic in the city center and the free tickets on public transport. But the soapbox race, architect walk, climate quiz and circus act, the dance show and the market on the main square all enables people to take over the streets. The car pool project and the challenge initiative for pupils to walk and bicycle more reduces the number of cars and is intended to bring more life to the streets of Östersund. The security and energy walk and the seminar on durable and equal transport both aim at establishing a foundation of knowledge in the participants. A knowledge that in the long term results in a higher level of safety, sustainability, security and equality to the people on the streets. The environmental breakfast held by the public transport sector should trigger interest for public transportation and planned investment in eco city buses. The municipal project regarding smart travel habits should trigger interest in public transportation. A test extension of the public transportation system, to reach a company currently out of range from buses, should also decrease the number of cars.
The bicycle race and the bicycle trip to the bio gas plant and filling station both activate the participants. The latter also plants knowledge about cars driven on renewable fuel in the minds of the interested; a knowledge that might result in a better environment when they make the choice to buy such a car. The exhibition of environment friendly cars is also tied into that equation.
