Participation 2008

The participant is committed to:

Organising a week of activities, taking into account the focal theme.
Actions relative to the theme:
Promotion of air quality issues and clean vehicle technology. Also the launch of a Commuter Guide for Chancery Lane area to promote walking as a main commuting mode.
Carrying out a Car-Free Day event by closing one or more streets to traffic, and opening it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. This should preferably happen on 22 September to mark your town or city as part of World Car-Free Day.
Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
Middle section of Chancery Lane, London WC2. Extents of closure from Southampton Buildings to Carey Street. Approximately 170 metres.
Implementing one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.
Permanent measures implemented this year:
  • Create or enlarge pedestrian streets
  • Other: Trial closure.
  • Lowering of pavements
  • Enlargement of pavements
New forms of vehicle use and ownership
  • Use of clean vehicles
Mobility management
  • Adoption of workplace travel plans
  • Adoption of school travel plans
  • Launch of awareness-raising campaigns
  • Development of systems and equipment for measuring air quality in public places
  • Organisation of regular fora or surveys on public opinions and ideas
