Activities within the week Activities within the week

Bitonto organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2008, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
In line with what has already been achieved with students, the actions planned for the European Mobility Week 2008 have the following objectives:

- to inform about the extent, variety and the danger of fine particles and gases emitted by vehicles for urban and individual transport (cars, motorcycles);
- to raise awareness about the need for sustainable urban mobility - cycling and pedestrian – in order to limit the emissions of toxic gases in the air;
- to convey the importance of the air quality for the health of citizens, especially the weaker ones(the elderly, children);
- to test and show techniques for air monitoring (lichenous biomonitoring, monitoring through use of passive samples);
- to inform the citizens about regional and provincial activities regarding the air monitoring (positioning of units for the detection of air quality);
- to illustrate the practices and techniques of mobility management to reduce the emission of toxic gases when citizens go to work.

Car-free day Car-free day

Bitonto carries out a Car-Free Day 2008 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
The chosen area is in the northeast of the city near the historic centre. It includes the town garden, an important “extra moenia” monastery, the main street with the City Hall, two important squares because they mark the boundary between the new and the old part of Bitonto.
The choice responds to the wish to discourage the use of cars in the new areas of the city where the structure of the streets and the larger number of public transport services should promote the use of alternative means of transport.
In addition, the organization of events planned for "in town without my car" requires the use of central streets crowded on Sunday in order to meet a more effective support from the citizens.
