Activities within the week Activities within the week

Zaanstad organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2009, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
12 September
Event Kick-off for the Dutch Mobility Week
On a special sustainability market, visitors could find information on sustainability, mobility, environment and nature. Furthermore, the market represented the kick-off for the Dutch Mobility Week.
Especially for children there were many activities, including a big treasure hunt. Next year (2010) this market will be joined by another activity, to increase the number of visitors.

14-18 September
Event Groene Voetstappen (Green Steps)
(children walk/bicycle to school instead of being driven their by their parents. By doing so, they earn "Green Steps". At the end of the week, the municipality congratulates the school which has collected the most Green Steps during the 5 day period)

This year, the start of the activity Green Steps was held on the primary school The Feniks in Zaandam, where all children were given a green ice for their enthusiasm and participation in the Green Steps activities. The children in the 8th grade held a discussion on the 14th on sustainability and the environment with the city councillor on Environment.
The winning school will be invited to join the city council meeting (The "Zaanstad Beraad") on 29th of October. During this meeting various primary school students will enter a discussion with city council spokespersons on sustainable mobility. Then an award will be given to the school that collects the most Green Steps by the city councillor on Environment. This year that award is a sport event, which will focus on special sports for less mobile-able persons.

14-18 September
Event School Newspaper Competition
On the occasion of the Dutch Mobility Week, three primary schools made their own school newspaper based on the topic "environment". The children of all groups could make a contribution such as a beautiful drawing, present a couple of tips to keep our local environment clean, hold an interview with someone on the environment, photographs or a poster which calls on citizens to concerve water or electricity.

The newspapers were then disseminated among students and an jury selected the most original, funny and best contributions among these newspapers. These will appear in the sustainability newspaper, which will be spread among all citizens in the municipality.

The jury consisted out of;
 Mr Linnekamp, city councillor for the Environment
 Mr Peolstra, chairman of the Environmental Platform Zaanstad
 Ms van Kleef, communication expert for the municipality

18 September
Event Mobility Market
During the Mobility Market the first electric charge unit. Furthermore, the first electric vehicles taken in operation by the municipality (4 cars and 4 scooters) were presented.
Visitors could test-drive these and other vehicles, such as the e-bike an e-trike. Finally, the market also featured the care of the future (the C,mm,n) and could test drive this car in the C,mm,n simulator.

Zaanstad cooperates with de municipality of Amsterdam to stimulate and promote electric transport. Because of this cooperation, an Electric Ribbon was laid between the city of Amsterdam and Zaanstad. This Electric Ribbon consisted out of 3 electric cars and numerous electric scooters, and accompanied the runners of the famous “Dam tot Dam loop”. This is a running contest in which participants go from Amsterdam to Zaanstad.
Both municipalities are now considering the option to have the whole Schoner Vervoer Tour (Clean Transport Tour), an event organised by Amsterdam, accompany the runners next year.
