Participation 2009

The participant is committed to:

Organising a week of activities, taking into account the focal theme.
Actions relative to the theme:
Because Dorset is a largely rural area and has no cities, we have adapted the theme to "improving local climates" enabling towns and villages in Dorset to participate. Our programme, which aims to promote the benefits of sustainable travel in a holistic way, includes mass cycle rides, a sk8jam (with promotions for carsharing, cycling, walking, public transport and car clubs), sustainable travel business breakfasts, cycle training for adults, and the launch of a second vehicle for the Dorchester Car Club. We shall focus on local air pollution and climate change in our marketing and publicity and shall be asking people to think these issues about during our week of events, but we will not neglect other important benefits of sustainable travel such as improving health and personal fitness, reducing congestion and financial savings.
Carrying out a Car-Free Day event by closing one or more streets to traffic, and opening it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. This should preferably happen on 22 September to mark your town or city as part of World Car-Free Day.
Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
We will close Upper Fairfield Road in Dorchester on the 19th of September from 7am until 7pm. It is a short link road between two of Dorchester's main streets and provides access to the skatepark and a carpark.

On the 22nd of September Christchurch Borough Council will close its carpark and in order to encourage its staff to leave their cars at home.
Implementing one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.
Permanent measures implemented this year:
New or improved bicycle facilities
  • Improvement of bicycle network (creation of new lanes, extension, renovation, signposting etc)
New forms of vehicle use and ownership
  • Launch of online car-pooling and car-sharing schemes
