Activities within the week Activities within the week

Nottingham organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2009, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
The Big Wheel's Big Day Out, a free one day family arts festival to celebrate European Mobility Week will be held on Saturday 26th September at Nottingham Castle. (N.B. This date was chosen as the nearest available Saturday to Car Free Day as The Castle was already booked for 19th September which would have been our preferred date). The event will provide information and activities for residents and visitors to promote sustainable travel options and address climate change. Visitors will also be able to visit the Architects of Air Luminarium and enjoy a range of creative arts, entertainment and live music. Travel offers have been negotiated with the local bus operators to provide travel discounts to people travelling by bus to the festival. In previous years the Big Day Out has attracted approx 15,000 visitors. The day will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor who will arrive at the Castle by cycle rickshaw. The event promotes the 2009 theme Improving City Climates as the day celebrates sustainable travel and other actions to reduce your carbon footprint presented in the form of an inclusive festival creating a positive atmosphere in the heart of the City. For more information about the Big Day Out visit www.thebigwheel.org.uk/festival. This information is being updated on a regular basis as plans for the event take shape.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
There will be a temporary road closure on the road leading up to the Castle Gatehouse from 8am to 6pm on Saturday 26th September creating additional space for festival activities. This space will be used for a sustainable transport “hall of fame” featuring exhibits too large to go inside the Castle grounds such as the ethanol-fuelled eco-bus. The area will also be used to create additional cycle parking for visitors to the event.
