Car-free day Car-free day

London Borough of Hackney (London) carries out a Car-Free Day 2013 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
The Narroway is an historic section of Mare St in Hackney Central. It is the historic high street with shop frontages on both sides. The section to be closed is from the junction with Amhurst Rd, to the junction with Dalston Lane, a section of about 160 metres. Previously, this was a one way street that was filled with busses. We have instituted a 6 month trial to re-direct busses from the street so that it can be pedestrian and cyclist only. This allows the street to be 2 way for cyclists, where it was only one way previously and cyclists had a lengthy detour when travelling north.
