In the mobility and transport sector Siena has boasted a solid experience since the 1960s with important measures such as the closure to vehicular traffic within the whole walled historical town.

Siena is the first Italian City to have closed its historic centre to traffic and has a wide Limited Traffic Zone (Italian ZTL). Over the years Siena has confirmed this choice and has implemented: automatic lifting installations systems integrated to the urban public transport network, automatic and electronic system for controlling access to the ZTL (27 smart entry/exit e-gates units either single or double ones), the urban public transport network (with an overall development of about 3 millions kilometres). Siena is for this reason one of the Italian cities to have the widest public transport network mileage).
