This year theme, Smart mobility. Strong economy, is encouraging both local politicians and the public to look at smart and sustainable mobility as an investment for Europe. These issues are fully matched in Rome, where presently the intensive use of private vehicles and, simultaneously, TP offer still far from the mobility needs of Rome, produces important economic losses of about 1.5 billion €/year, net of environmental costs, equivalent to 135 million hours lost by Roman citizens for their journeys.
The new Mayor Mobility Program Guide Lines set specific objectives and prevalent actions zone by zone to recover balance among all modes and healthy quality of life. This “soft revolution” is reinforcing the sustainable mobility concept with hard analysis of delays with other EU Capitals, in terms of car properties, congestion costs, low PT commercial speed, metro length, pollution and safety level.
It starts from an hard analysis of delays with other EU Capitals, in terms of car properties, congestion costs, low PT commercial speed, metro length, pollution and safety level.
The general aim of Rome is then to have a city full of opportunity with a public transport more efficient and competitive compared to private cars, where to walk or bike is safe, easy and convenient, first of all for the children and for the elderly. In this scheme, private car policy and tourist buses will be oriented to the decongestion of the central areas. P&R system will be extended and encouraged. Keyword is to improve safety conditions and the creation of local cycling networks starting from few pilot areas. Intermodality is supported with bike sharing, car sharing and electric mobility modes that are becoming an integral part of a new mobility policy, offering more extensively alternatives for mobility of city users.
An efficient public transport service need to be supported by the extension of protected lanes network, supported by a traffic light priority systems. A multi-year plan for transport infrastructure shared with citizens, preferring the Tramway networks and modernization and extension of the metro network and tangential connections, including rail will be quickly developed. ."Active mobility" is strongly promoted: a network of bike lanes "light", safe, interconnected and connected with the metro stations, racks spread near the stations. Streets and squares will be redesigned favoring public transport, pedestrians and cyclists: introduction of pedestrian zones, zones 30 and a suitable street furniture.
Teleworking tool will be promoted also within the City Administration and its Subsidiaries to reduce the demand for mobility and activities will be devoted to the re-launch of the figure of the mobility manager and their effectiveness, in cooperation with productive sectors of the city.
Awareness campaign for road safety issues. Preventive measures, but also an activity of more stringent control, starting from repression of the most dangerous behaviors
Technological Revolution: updated ITS technologies and expansion of Mobility Services with limited economic resources but including intelligent traffic lights, geo referencing tools, open data, data warehouse, ecc.

Roma (Rome) carries out a Car-Free Day 2016 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
ZTL (limited traffic zones) are already active in Roma to limit/ban the access of private cars in large portion of the day. The electronic gates, working with ANPR (Automatic NumberPlate Recognition)systems are controlling each ZTL zone of the inner centreas well as fining unauthorized cars. Currently, such e-gates are placed in four districts (Historical centre, S. Lorenzo, Trastevere and Testaccio) Such measures combined with the implementing of soft mobility areas are quite effective in reducing private vehicles access
This year, the Municipality has been actively committed in implementing restrictive measures against private traffic in the historical center of Roma with a structural measure of closing the so-called Tridente area in the inner centre in daytime. The Jubilee of Mercy events increase during its events the pedestrian areas in the historic center and in areas linking to Vatican State as well as in other ones with greater attractiveness and social tourism. More, realization of 4 new pedestrian paths called “Pope Path “A””, “Pope Path”, “Pilgrim Path” and “Marian Path” crossing the city centre from Basilica areas to San Peter are operational forall Jubilee period, up to November 2016.
Other specific measures – as described in Mobility Week 2016 Program, are expected in City Boroughs/Districts – of Roma with organization of specific initiatives to arise the citizen awareness on sustainable mobility, also in partnership with social associations and mobility operators.
