Activities within the week Activities within the week

Aberdeen City organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2016, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
During European Mobility Week, Aberdeen City Council and partners will be:
• Holding a series of bicycle roadshows throughout the region, giving schoolchildren, students, commuters and members of the public experience of riding various types of bike, as well as advice on cycle routes and safe cycling, encouraging more journeys to be undertaken by bike;
• Hosting the fourth annual Pedal for Scotland cycle challenge in Aberdeen, in partnership with Cycling Scotland;
• Organising a sponsored cycle ride of the local area with a cluster of schools in the north of the City;
• Organising road safety magic shows in schools, educating children how to keep safe when walking and cycling to school;
• Participating in an electric vehicle roadshow, organised by the Energy Saving Trust (Scotland), giving members of the public an opportunity to find out more about the benefits of electric vehicle (EV) ownership and to test drive EVs.
Half of the City's primary schools will also be engaged in the Living Streets Travel Tracker sustainable transport incentive scheme during this time, whereby those pupils regularly travelling actively to school are rewarded with collectible pin badges.

Further info
In and around European Mobility Week:
• Three schools in Aberdeen will benefit from the implementation of cycle and/or scooter parking facilities;
• A safe routes to school project will formally launch at Cults School, where three safe walking routes have been marked on the pavement with brightly-coloured footprint illustrations;
• A new Park and Choose site will be launched at the east of the City in Dyce. As well as providing traditional park and ride facilities, the site will also offer opportunities for cycle parking, showering and changing and charging of electric vehicles;
• Two new car club bays will be implemented in the regeneration areas of Middlefield and Heathryfold. These will host low or no emission vehicles, improving low-carbon access to opportunities for those living in these communities.
An updated cycle map and public transport map are currently being updated and it is hoped that these can also be formally launched during EMW. The Council has also recently commenced the statutory consultation process for the progression of a Traffic Regulation Order to restrict access to one of the main City Centre streets to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Car-free day Car-free day

Aberdeen City carries out a Car-Free Day 2016 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
We will be closing a collection of streets in the City Centre (Schoolhill, Belmont Street and Little Belmont Street) to traffic in order to host a family fun day on Sunday 25th September. The purpose of this is twofold:
1. To allow members of the public to experience a normally busy street in a different way, without the noise and distraction of motor vehicles, and to appreciate how public spaces can be used differently in the City; and
2. To encourage members of the public to be more physically active and to consider adopting more sustainable travel choices.
Accordingly, the event will include both family-friendly attractions on-street (street games, inflatables, circus skills, face painting, etc.) and a range of information stalls and exhibits where people can find out more about keeping active and travelling more sustainably. Local walking and cycling groups, bus, rail and car club operators, and public sector bodies representing health, transport and air quality are therefore expected to attend.
