The cyclevalletta project aims to bring to the forefront cycling as an effective ,healthy social and green transport mode in the city ,Valletta will lead the way promoting cycling on a large scale by investing in a new and innovative infrastructure to support cycling and cyclists that reside in and visit the city .Increasing cyle use has environmental ,energy and transport implications . it brings to the forefront related to sustainability mobility and provides the opportunity to advertise the benefits of cycling through the infrastructure .This project is therefore aimed at reducing co2 emissions ,encouraging modal shift supporting active modes of travel amongst themes relevant for this application.

Aims and objectives of the measure proposed

The cycle Valletta project aims to promote cycling through physical interventions throughout the city such as installations of bicycle racks ,conversion of a disused public coonvience into a bicycle kitchen and a centre for cyclists, identification of safe routes foor cyclists in and around valletta .these measures will reduce the congestion through modal shift ,will improve air quality by facilitating cycling , reduce energy demands from motorised to non motorised modes. it will above all create the space within the city where a healthy cycling community can come together .this will be the first ever such space dedicated to cyclists.

Description of measure
cycle Valletta sees the implementation of a number of measures ;
1)installation of bicycle racks at 9 locations
2)conversion of disuded public convenience into a bicycle kitchen and a centre for cyclists .the bicycle kitchen will be also equipped with bicycle lockers.showers and locker facilities may also be included in refurbishment plans .A cycling café can also be operated under the concession from the local council to a social enterprise group .this might be one way of sustaining the project beyond the funding period.
3) identification of safe routes for the cyclists in and around the city.safe routes will be identified through audits and advertised.
4) soft measures to establish shared routes around Valletta.the Valletta local council will invest some of the funding to introduce new signage indicating walking and cycling times would also be installed.
Target groups
All sectors of society wll be effected by this measure .those already interested in cycling will finally have a meeting point where they can meet like minded people ,but also use facilities for maintaining and repairing their bicycles .thus a community is formed
the visibility of the new infrastructure will also appeal to non cyclists who are hesitant to use such a mode of transport..this can be a Valetta employee living with a short distance of the city a tourist and anyone with an interest in trying cycling as an alternative mode.
