City of Cape Town organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2018, taking into account the annual theme.

19 September
Councillor Brett Herron, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, caught up with a senior citizens group that undertakes monthly exploratory trips on the metropolitan BRT MyCiTi service.

The City is encouraging the use of the MyCiTi service, especially during offpeak periods when costs are lower and there are available seats for new commuters to test out the service easily.

The bus service provides an efficient public transport system that works for Capetonians of all ages, especially our most vulnerable citizens. Senior citizens do not need to lose their independence or feel isolated and miss out on things happening in and around their area – MyCiTi enables our citizens to move around with ease.

The senior citizens reported that they use the bus service for shopping, hospital visits and attending meetings. Some members prefer to take the MyCiTi bus to government offices in the CBD as it is easy to walk around and you have no parking problems, no traffic, and it is fast, safe and cheap.

The seniors group that Cllr Herron met challenged other senior citizens around the city to make use of the MyCiTi bus. Their chairperson, Betz Maritz, said it is a wonderful, safe and fun way to explore our beautiful city.

Permanent measures Permanent measures

City of Cape Town implements one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.

New or improved bicycle facilities
Improvement of bicycle network (creation of new lanes, extension, renovation, signposting etc)
Expanding the City’s cycle lane network to facilitate safer and easier cycling. The new route along the coast is possibly one of the world's most beautiful.
Public transport services
Improvement and extension of the public transport network (creation of HOV lanes for public transport modes, new stops, new lines, reserved areas etc)
The City is extending its bus services to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, which could halve commuter times for these under-serviced, former apartheid-era 'coloured' and 'black' neighbourhoods.
