• Car-Free-Day
Carrying out a Car-Free Day event by closing one or more streets to traffic, and opening it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. This should preferably happen on 22 September to mark your town or city as part of World Car-Free Day.
Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
On September 22nd the part of Świdnicka Street and Kosciuszko Square will be closed for car traffic and transformed into a pedestrian-friendly zone coexisting with bikes, scooters and trams. During the whole day inhabitants will have an opportunity to take advantage of many activities including city game promoting sustainable mobility, various workshops, movie shows about transformation into cycling-friendly city and other activities including art, recreation and civil society engagement.
A one-day demonstrator of a tram stop with an elevated road-platform (Vienna stop) will be constructed of wooden boards to promote a real investment planned for 2020. The Friends of Public Transport Club invites all history-lovers for a ride on an antique tram. All who accepted a 10k steps challenge at least once during EMW can join a lottery in which they (all) win attractive prizes provided by the event partners. Everybody through direct conversation with the city officials and decision-makers may learn about plans for future of Kosciuszko Square and its surroundings, promoting sustainable mobility and agenda oriented to make city spaces more green and livable.
Two subjects will be on focus during workshops organized on the Car Free Day in Wroclaw. One is accessibility and inclusion of people with different disabilities. A project Be Together has been invited to make a barrier-map which everybody can take part in – for example by making a round-trip through the square on a wheel chair and recognizing difficulties. Another subject is active mobility and safety with a special target group among the youngest Wroclaw inhabitants. Empting the space of cars gives an opportunity to show that city may be a good place to play, have fun, meet people and cooperate with them. To achieve the goal two special zones are to be created in the square: sport zone and scooter-riders zone. Also a special workshop explaining children why it’s reasonable to use alternatives for car while getting through a city is planned by City Action Association.
Kosciuszko Square is well known as an art-spot and the fact also has an impact on planned activities. Movie shows, book-reading by celebrities, children art-contest are all on the agenda.
Using public transport in Wroclaw and surrounding districts will be free of charge during that day.
