Heraklion (HΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ) organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2021, taking into account the annual theme.

16 September
Starting from Thursday the 16th, We release the first online QUIZ for health and sustainable mobility, and winners get the chance to participate in the lottery for a bike! We add indicative "snake routes" with stickers on pedestrian crossings around schools, re-paint pedestrian crossings. The local police department along with the traffic police “Warn” undisciplined drivers for antisocial driving and parking behaviour with funny and informative flyers that resemble traffic fines. The traffic department also re-paints pedestrian crossings all over the city from today until the 22nd of September.
17 September
The SUMP of Heraklion is finalized. Today is the day for the last public consultation on SUMP measures and actions. Where will we see new bike lanes, new pedestrian streets, new streets WITH sidewalks, new bus lanes and public transport routes? How will we organize school zones and parking areas? Will electromobility thrive if we add the proper infrastructure? Are there any smart systems that can help Heraklion change its car-centric future? This and many more will be presented on Friday afternoon.
18 September
Events are decentralized. The city centre is not our focus for this year’s events. Neighborhoods are becoming popular, so we set up kiosks in different neighborhoods for kids to draw and play and for citizens to get informed about recent or upcoming actions and measures in their neighborhood. Mastabas community is revived and its central square is getting a big kiosk for children to draw and win presents. A monitor is connected, and videos play all day long; Videos from local and national experts inform the people about the 15- minute city, about the impact of noise in the cities and of course about the local conditions of air quality. “Young bike engineers” workshop will also take place in the central neighborhood square. New trees are planted in nearby empty spaces with the participation of students from the surrounding schools.
19 September
The children’s’ kiosk, videos and the “Young bike engineers” workshop travel in other neighborhoods (i.e. Kaminia, Sain John’s), while new trees are planted in the areas with the assistant of students and volunteers. Professional drivers (couriers etc.) reply to questionnaire regarding their habits and trends for new environmental friendly vehicles and their thoughts on cargo bikes, e-bikes, green vans etc.
20 September
Events continue their travel in different neighborhoods and new parks arise as empty spaces are turned into green spaces. A new safe bicycle parking for up to 10 bicycles will be located for the first time in the city center.
21 September
Events continue their travel in different neighborhoods. A new public Electric Vehicle Charger will also be located for the first time close to the city centre. The traffic department continue to refresh existing pedestrian crossings, will also add new crossings in critical points while also parking for motorcycles are placed all around the city centre.
22 September
nts (Young Bike engineers, Children’s kiosk) go to the city centre. Videos play all day long; Videos from local and national experts inform the people about the 15- minute city, about the impact of noise in the cities and of course about the local conditions of air quality. Up to three schools attend the workshop and get diplomas for “Bike Engineers”. In the afternoon doctors, psychologists, nutritionists get on a vivid panel to discuss … how health is related to the way we travel!! We close the week with music and lottery gifts for the little students and those who took part in the online quiz.
