ACTION in the spotlight

Parklet2go - Pedal-powered placemaking

Parklet2go is a project organised by Smarter Than Car, an advocacy and research and development group for future urban mobility and post carbon urbanism, which seeks to engage local residents in discussions on urban planning by converting car parking spaces into temporary parklets.

Unlike traditional parklets, which are permanent installations, Parklet2go is a temporary park, which can be set-up and dismantled quickly.

The parklet consists of two benches, which can accommodate 2-3 people each, a table, three flowerbeds, and a plant container with a city tree.  The furniture is designed in such a way so that it can be easily transported by cargo bicycle.

On 22 September, in parallel with nearly 3 100 towns and cities participating in EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2019, Parklet2go organised a number of events in Vienna (Austria), setting up their temporary parklet in two different locations in the city.

Through setting up the parklets, they illustrated how parking spaces in the city could be used as liveable spaces to sit, relax, and enjoy the urban setting.

The parklets also sparked conversations around urban spaces, urban planning, car parking in the Austrian capital, and sustainable urban mobility, with a number of local residents engaging in the discussions, while enjoying the temporary parklet.
