ACTION in the spotlight

Stanley Black & Decker encourages employees to use sustainable modes of transport

As part of its CSR Strategy, Stanley Black & Decker has set the ambitious target of reducing its carbon footprint intensity by 20 percent by 2020, compared to the 2015 baseline. The company’s MOBILITYACTION is one of the ways the team is working toward this goal.

From 16-22 September, in parallel with nearly 2,800 towns and cities participating in EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2018, Stanley Black & Decker organised a week of activities across 34 locations in 15 countries, which saw 7,000 employees participating in the week.

Each participating location was appointed a MOBILITYACTION champion, who helped organise and promote activities during the week. These champions raised awareness of the benefits of sustainable mobility, and encouraged employees to use sustainable modes of transport to commute to work.

Activities included hybrid and electric car demonstrations, promoting public transportation through offering reimbursement of public transport tickets, carpooling, facilitating access to bikes, organising contests to encourage people to walk or cycle, and participating in the Social Biking Challenge. At the end of the week, many employees joined the car-free day initiative.

Throughout the week, employees proposed measures for permanent improvement, examples for change include - installing secure cycle storage, dedicated notice boards where employees can offer and find carpooling options, making their work from home policy more widely available, offering a ‘carpool pass’ and reserved car parking spaces for those willing to carpool, allowing employees who are entitled to company cars the option to also choose from hybrid or electric cars, and the purchase of 10 e-bikes for shared use in five of their locations.

The company is now also working with some local governments and public authorities to improve public transportation to their workplaces, and ensuring sustainable mobility is taken into consideration when tendering for logistics companies, with a preference for rail freight over road freight.

Stanley Black & Decker has long been committed to improving the communities in which their employees live and work. The company’s 2030 CSR Strategy is focused on empowering makers to thrive in a changing world, innovating with purpose to improve environmental impacts and creating a more sustainable world.
