Canal Plogging Uzbekistan

16 - 21 September 2021

Canal plogging in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan, two plogging events were organised by the Tashkent Runners during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK. The first stretch of the rubbish collection took place along the Anchor canal, followed by a second run along the Qichqiriq canal.

The word ‘plogging’ comes from a mix between jogging and the Swedish word ‘plocka upp’ which means ‘to pick up’. The Swedish fitness craze is increasingly popular in other parts of the world where citizens are starting to set up ‘‘plogging squads’ to workout, keep fit and save the planet from soil pollution. Plogging means a change in attitude towards the surrounding environment. Thus, ‘Plowers’ are proud of collecting garbage because they are taking an active part in safeguarding the environment.

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues, threatening ecosystems, wildlife, and habitats. This eco-friendly workout is a way to show how small actions and habits can have a significant impact on the environment. It also aims to raise awareness about littering and its negative impact on flora and fauna.
