PéPedal - Active Mobility to School Program Portugal

Permanent since 04 September 2023

PéPedal is a pioneering initiative transforming school mobility in Aveiro by encouraging healthy and sustainable habits from an early age.

The project involves pupils from two preschools and four primary schools, with a strong focus on active mobility. PéPedal promotes healthier, more enjoyable daily journeys for children.

Launched by Ciclaveiro, a local NGO, the initiative operates 13 “train lines” — ten walking routes and three cycling routes — led by volunteer parents known as “train drivers”. By reducing car traffic around schools, PéPedal helps create safer environments for children. By the end of the last school year, we had completed 2,187 journeys, establishing active mobility as a regular part of children’s routines.

Each participant receives a ‘rail card’ with a QR code to collect points for every trip, which can be exchanged at local shops and with cultural or sports partners collaborating with PéPedal. This rewards system strengthens the connection between schools and the wider community.

The project also includes the MiniRodas Academy, where children learn to ride bicycles and develop essential skills for sustainable mobility. In addition, the PéPedal Clinic offers support from healthcare professionals — including doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists — emphasising the health benefits of active mobility.

PéPedal is more than just a mobility project – it is a movement empowering children as agents of change and inspiring the community to embrace a healthier, more sustainable future.
