BikeToWork: Paris La Défense
Unfortunately, the personal passenger car often remains the dominant form of transportation, even in a large metropolis with excellent public transport connections like Paris. Citizens are often unaware about the feasibility of commuting by bike and the related health benefits. Biking is increasingly popular in cities like Paris, due to significant infrastructure investments.
During EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK, two days were dedicated to the ‘Bike to Work’ initiative ‘La Défense’, the main business district of the French capital. The 2-day event, which is organised by the local authorities of Paris La Défense and Mobility Makers, is targeting 180.000 employees, of which around 1/3 live less than 30 minutes away by bike.
In order to encourage participation and get employees interested in biking, activities and events showcase accessories and practices adapted to employee mobility. Overall, the aim of the event is to showcase environmentally friendly mobility solutions adapted to employees' professional journeys.
Such bike to work initiatives that last for days, months or even an entire year, can be promoted by leasing schemes for bikes, point systems for each trip or kilometer made on a bike, small competitions between colleagues or offices, as well as financial incentives.
