The Mobility Week isn’t limited to city centres

Closing roads, organising educational activities and the car-free Sunday are significant pillars of the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK. The ‘Connected and Economic Board’ of The Hague took a different turn and focused on larger companies with a significant workforce that aim to reduce the negative externalities of commuting.

Nine large employers, with an accumulated number of around 10.000 employees, in and around The Hague participated in the scheme to promote home office. These employers encouraged their employees to change travel behaviour: not traveling (working from home), avoiding rush hour, cycling or using public transport.

Besides promoting low- or zero-emission mobility solutions, all employers also provided incentives for participating employees, such as a bicycle repair shop on location for a bicycle check, breakfast for cyclists, a map with P&R locations around the office, as well as a discount for a bike purchase.

The results of the promotion were very successful! At least 3% fewer traffic jams and 14 tons of CO2 were saved in a week. Additionally, the above-stated encouraging actions resulted in total of 70,000 km less travelled.
