Detailed description (English): This year, Kranj became a vibrant hub of sustainable mobility much before the official start of EMW. We aimed to reclaim more public spaces and create safer, more enjoyable streets. We kicked off in mid-July with lively "Sustainability Bazaars," where citizens exchanged and donated sport equipment. Alongside, there were numerous workshops and cycling excursions, fostering community spirit and environmental responsibility.
On Sept 1, we launched "Citizens commute sustainably” campaign inspiring over 3,800 residents (7% of the city) to do daily commutes sustainably. The initiative promoted healthier lifestyles and significantly reduced pollution. At local schools, kids received engaging educational booklet, we specially designed, to allow them to document their car free journeys and learn about sustainability.
On Sept 16, over 100 high school students attended an interactive day on “How to make urban life comfortable”. The "Park'n'Play" events on sept 18 & 19 saw more than 800 elementary school kids engaging in hands-on workshops in their schoolyards.
The grand finale, “KRfest,” took place on Sept 20 & 21, highlighting car-free living along the Mlaka-Brdo route. Visitors tested e-bikes and participated in various workshops. The second day at “Dom na Joštu” featured health-focused activities and a symbolic handover of new edition of bike-sharing bicycle, underscoring Kranj's commitment to sustainability.
To conclude, we proudly call EMW’24 a success. We are excited to nominate Kranj for the Award, believing our efforts can inspire others nationally and internationally.
Target group(s): Citizen of Kranj: young, elderly, employed. Providers of sustainable mobility, schools, companies, NGOs
Objectives: Changing everyday travel habits to more sustainable ones. Safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly transportation options. We integrated different modes of mobility to provide desirable alternative to individual cars. By expanding effort from solely municipal effort to wider alliance of public and private stakeholders we can achieve real transformation of mobility habits at work, school, free time activities and other needs to move.
