Detailed description (English): In the lead-up to Strapdag, the Flemish “walk & bike to school” day, our school is fully committed to inspiring as many students as possible to come to school in a sustainable and active way. While we warmly support public transport, we want to make walking and cycling both attractive and safe.
That is why we promote the KAZ bike routes, an extension of the local Octopusplan, which connect surrounding municipalities with clear meeting points where students can gather and cycle together. This makes the journey safer and more motivating, especially for younger pupils and their parents.
During Strapdag week, students will receive free bike lights and have the chance to register their bikes at mybike.be, a quick and free government service that helps police return lost or stolen bicycles.
In addition, we organize a bike workshop where students can learn the basics of bicycle repair, fostering independence and practical skills.
Finally, Strapdag becomes a friendly competition: in each grade, the class with the highest percentage of walkers or cyclists wins a prize, while those who use bus or train also earn recognition. Together we promote health, safety, and a greener future on the road to school.
Target group(s): 1100 pupils and 120 teachers from highschool GO!Atheneum Zottegem
Objectives: 1 Promote sustainable mobility by encouraging students to walk or cycle to school instead of relying solely on cars.
2 Increase safety and motivation by sharing KAZ bike routes with designated meeting points so students can cycle together.
3 Raise awareness of bicycle security by distributing free bike lights and supporting registration through mybike.be.
4 Develop practical skills and independence through bike workshops teaching students the basics of bicycle repair.
5 Foster community spirit and teamwork with a class challenge rewarding the groups with the highest share of walkers and cyclists.
6 Encourage multimodal transport choices by also recognizing students who use bus or train as part of their sustainable journey.
