Detailed description (English): Ride-hailing services and taxis have become an essential part of Europe’s urban mobility ecosystem. Today, one in four Europeans uses ride-hailing as a reliable and flexible transport option, filling gaps in public transit and reducing dependency on private car ownership. However, despite its significant contributions, outdated and inconsistent regulations continue to hinder its full potential, limiting consumer choice and fair competition.
The event is co-hosted by MEP Cristea and Move EU, the ride-hailing association, consisting of Bolt and Uber, and is built around a study commissioned by Move EU and conducted by Ricardo, assessing the socio-economic contribution of ride-hailing in Europe and different regulatory approaches. The presentation will include key insights into how ride-hailing contributes to the digital transformation of urban mobility, economic opportunities, and environmental sustainability.
The event is going to be the first discussion following the 2025 Single Market Strategy call for “actions for applying EU single market rules and principles to the taxi and private hired vehicles sector”. The event will also be the opportunity to take stock of the current business and regulatory landscape, and possible steps forward, following the European Commission’s 2022 Guidance Notice on the well-functioning and sustainable local passenger transport-on-demand.
Target group(s): Policy Makers, Industry Representatives, Experts in the field of urban mobility
Objectives: Highlight the socio-economic contribution of the ride-hailing sector to the European Union and the discriminatory and disproportionate regulations hindering competition and growth in the sector. In light of the EU’s ambitions to strengthen the Single Market and simplify regulations, promote the need for a Single Market for Mobility.
