Detailed description (English): The project “To Gumiel by Bike”, launched in 2023, aims to reduce the carbon footprint and promote sustainable habits through cycling. Its goal is to raise awareness about sustainable mobility and highlight how small actions can positively impact the environment.
Open to all students at IES Arquitecto Pedro Gumiel, participation is voluntary and includes incentives. Some departments give academic credit, and each month a sandwich voucher is raffled among students who cycle to school most often. Students can also help promote the project by creating posters, articles, or podcasts.
Participation is simple: students report the distance between their home and the school and receive an ID badge with a unique number to record their cycling days. Based on this data, the project calculates the CO₂ saved, estimating that every kilometer cycled instead of driven avoids 150 grams of CO₂ emissions.
To encourage involvement, a safe route operates on Thursdays, where teachers accompany students from a meeting point to the school. Additionally, bike trips are organized under staff supervision.
Through this initiative, the institute strengthens its commitment to sustainability and environmental education, promoting cycling as a practical and eco-friendly means of transportation.
Detailed description (original language): El proyecto “Al Gumiel en bicicleta”, iniciado en 2023, busca reducir la huella de carbono y fomentar hábitos sostenibles mediante el uso de la bicicleta. Su objetivo es concienciar sobre la movilidad sostenible y valorar el impacto positivo de las pequeñas acciones en el medio ambiente.
Dirigido a todos los estudiantes del instituto, la participación es voluntaria y cuenta con incentivos. Algunos departamentos valoran académicamente la actividad, y cada mes se sortea un vale para bocadillos entre los alumnos que más días acudan en bicicleta. Además, los estudiantes pueden colaborar en la difusión del proyecto mediante carteles, artículos o podcasts.
El proceso de participación es sencillo: los interesados informan sobre la distancia entre su domicilio y el instituto y reciben una chapa identificativa con un número único para registrar su asistencia en bicicleta. Con estos datos, se calcula el CO₂ no emitido, considerando que por cada kilómetro recorrido en bicicleta en lugar de en coche se evitan 150 gramos de CO₂.
Para fomentar la participación, se ha creado una ruta segura los jueves, donde profesores acompañan a los alumnos desde un punto de reunión hasta el instituto. También se organizan excursiones en bicicleta, supervisadas por docentes.
Con esta iniciativa, el IES Arquitecto Pedro Gumiel refuerza su compromiso con la sostenibilidad y la educación ambiental, promoviendo el uso de la bicicleta como alternativa de movilidad.
