Detailed description (English): As part of the Biennale dello Stretto - Invisible Mediterraneans, which kicks off on September 18th between the cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria, and in celebration of EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK, the European Commission's campaign, an exciting tactical urbanism project is being launched in Villa San Giovanni.
The small town, a vital maritime gateway to Sicily and a future hub for the forthcoming Strait Bridge - completing the European TEN-T infrastructure corridor - is set to undergo a dynamic transformation. While we wait for the bigger projects to come to fruition, we're seizing the opportunity to reimagine the existing space, making it safer, more sustainable and more pedestrian-friendly.
On the stunning Fata Morgana waterfront in the vibrant Cannitello area, we'll be reconfiguring the current roadways with strategic interventions, improving pedestrian crossings and reclaiming lanes and parking spaces for people. We'll breathe new life into the area with eye-catching signage, bright colours, bike racks and playful public spaces. This tactical action aims to shift the focus from cars to people, creating safer, more accessible spaces that everyone can enjoy.
Using tactical urbanism, we'll implement innovative, temporary changes that can be tested and enjoyed by the community straight away. This approach accelerates change by involving citizens in the design and delivery of their public spaces.
The initiative is curated by the Fondazione Mobilità in Città ETS, with Biennale dello Stretto, OAPPC and with the financial support of the Municipality of Villa San Giovanni.
