Detailed description (English): The Safe Roads project by Hellas Direct is a hands-on road safety project aiming at safer streets for everyone, especially children. Hellas Direct is an insurance company that cares, beyond insurance, for the safety for all.
At Hellas Direct, we know that children are among the vulnerable road users. We recognise that due to their physical and cognitive development, they are more exposed during their travels. It is the responsibility of adults to protect them with simultaneous interventions throughout the mobility system. However, factors such as insufficient infrastructure, the increasing number and size of vehicles, high speed, and the distracted attention of adults continuously put them at risk.
In an effort to reduce their exposure to road hazards, we identified their most frequent routine travel, which is to and from their schools. And because we know very well that the safer the roads are, the fewer accidents we will have, we decided to take action. With our owned vans and our expert crew, we go wherever we are needed, all around Greece, in order to improve road safety. We paint and revamp zebra crossings outside schools and organise informative, interactive activities at schools.
For our interventions on the roads, we always cooperate with the municipalities; we act with their permission, at the locations they indicate, and follow all the specified standards.
Detailed description (original language): Το Safe Roads project από την Hellas Direct είναι ένα hands-on έργο οδικής ασφάλειας που έχει στόχο ασφαλέστερους δρόμους για όλους και ιδιαίτερα για τα παιδιά. Η Hellas Direct είναι μια ασφαλιστική εταιρεία που νοιάζεται, πέρα από την ασφάλιση, για την ασφάλεια όλων.
Στην Hellas Direct ξέρουμε πως τα παιδιά συγκαταλέγονται στους ευάλωτους χρήστες του δρόμου. Αναγνωρίζουμε πως λόγω της σωματικής και γνωστικής ανάπτυξής τους είναι πιο εκτεθειμένα κατά τις μετακινήσεις τους. Είναι ευθύνη των ενηλίκων να τα προστατεύουν με ταυτόχρονες παρεμβάσεις σε όλο το σύστημα της κινητικότητας. Ωστόσο, παράγοντες όπως οι ανεπαρκείς υποδομές, ο αυξανόμενος αριθμός αυτοκινήτων και το αυξανόμενο μέγεθός τους, η μεγάλη ταχύτητα και η ανεπαρκής προσοχή των ενηλίκων τα θέτουν συνεχώς σε κίνδυνο.
Επιχειρώντας να περιορίσουμε την έκθεσή τους σε τροχαίους κινδύνους, εντοπίσαμε τη συχνότερη τακτική μετακίνησή τους, που είναι προς και από τα σχολεία τους. Και επειδή ξέρουμε πολύ καλά ότι όσο πιο ασφαλείς είναι οι δρόμοι, τόσο λιγότερα ατυχήματα θα έχουμε, αποφασίσαμε να δράσουμε. Με τα δικά μας οχήματα και το εξειδικευμένο συνεργείο μας, πηγαίνουμε όπου μας χρειάζονται, σε όλη την Ελλάδα, για να βελτιώσουμε την οδική ασφάλεια. Βάφουμε και αναβαθμίζουμε τις διαβάσεις πεζών έξω από τα σχολεία και οργανώνουμε ενημερωτικές διαδραστικές δραστηριότητες στα σχολεία.
Για τις παρεμβάσεις μας στους δρόμους είμαστε πάντα σε συνεργασία με τους δήμους, δρούμε με την άδειά τους, στα σημεία που μας υποδεικνύουν και τηρώντας όλες τις προβλεπόμενες προδιαγραφές.
Target group(s): The primary beneficiaries of the project are the children, who gain safe passage to and from their schools. Indirectly, however, many adults around the children also benefit: the parents, who receive assistance in their effort to instil basic principles of road safety in their children. The educators and the schools visited by the Safe Roads project also benefit, as they have an excellent opportunity to raise awareness and educate students about road safety, utilising the practical result of the freshly painted crossing.
Ultimately, the municipalities also benefit, as the Safe Roads project undertakes the task of improving road safety conditions, which is typically their responsibility. Thus, the program helps address ongoing and continuous needs that, in reality, never end.
Objectives: The primary objective of the program is to improve road safety for children. Each freshly painted crossing should provide practical protection as they move along the road and serve as an opportunity for education and awareness of road safety issues. The long-term goal of the program is to ensure that all schools across the country have clear and safe pedestrian crossings. The ultimate aim is to achieve zero accidents.
Partner: Hellas Direct, with its own vans and expert crew, designs and completes the project. The most important partners are the municipalities, which either accept citizens’ requests to invite the Safe Road project to each neighbourhood and city or apply the request themselves and then give all the necessary permissions so that the Safe Roads project can roam the streets and fix them.
