Detailed description (English): Zaragoza Tram is the tramline with the highest demand in Spain, with more than 100,000 passengers per day before COVID, in a city of 700,000 inhabitants and with just one line.
With the objective of providing a safe and healthy transport system for the passengers during the pandemic and in the post-COVID era, Zaragoza Tram has signed an agreement with the University of Zaragoza and the Public Institute of Health Investigation of Aragón that began in 2020 with a deep research of the CO2 levels inside the trams in operation, and the development of different improvements like new EPA filters in HVAC system, changes in the air return and an the opening of the proper windows to guarantee the best air condition during the trips.
As well, Zaragoza Tram is developing a pioneer system in the light rails in Spain and Europe: the Bipolar Air Ionization inside the vehicles. This system produces a natural bio-climate rich in positive and negative oxygen ions. The negative ions contain an extra electron while the positive ions are missing an electron resulting in an unstable condition. In an effort to restabilize, these bipolar ions seek out atoms and molecules in the air to trade electrons with, effectively neutralizing particulate matter, bacteria and virus cells, odorous gases and aerosols, and VOCs.
With this system, the air that the passengers will breath inside the trams will be healthier and cleaner than outside.
