Objectives: The screening of the documentary "Together We Cycle" in Mainvilliers, in partnership with ChartràVélo, aims to promote cycling in France, drawing inspiration from the success of the Netherlands in the development of cycling policies. The event seeks to raise public awareness of the importance of the bicycle as a means of daily transport.
Over the past three years, France has seen a notable increase in urban cycling. However, the event seeks to go further by exploring how the bicycle can contribute to solving various contemporary problems. This includes improving air quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles, promoting affordable mobility, encouraging physical activity, reducing urban sprawl and downtown revitalization.
The documentary "Together We Cycle" offers an insight into the history of cycling policies in the Netherlands. It shows how this country evolved from a car-centric outlook in the 1970s to a thriving bike culture. Factors such as citizen pressure for friendly streets and the 1973 oil crisis contributed to this change. The film gives voice to the actors of this revolution.
After the screening, a meeting with Etienne DEMUR, a cycling advocate in France, will discuss the place of cycling in Mainvilliers and throughout the Eure-et-Loir region. Participants will be able to discuss cycling facilities, incentives for cycling and community initiatives aimed at encouraging cycling.
In short, this event aims to raise awareness, inspire and educate the public on the potential of cycling as a mode of transport, based on the Dutch example. It encourages reflection on how to adopt similar policies in Mainvilliers and the region to further promote the use of bicycles on a daily basis.
