Detailed description (English): On September 22nd , at 12:00pm the Georgia Alliance for Safe Roads together with the partner organizations – GeoRiders, Tbilisi Bicycle Group, Eco Transport Centre, Transport and Roads Association of Georgia, Partnership for Road Safety, Georgian Automobile Sport Federation and the civil initiative group ‘’Heart for Tbilisi’’ – will join the world in marking the World Car Free Day. This day is marked first time in Georgia.
The event will be joined and supported by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia - Mr. Gigla Agulashvili and the Deputy Minister - Mrs. Ekaterine Grigalava as well as by the Tbilisi City Mayor - Mr. Davit Narmania and the Ministry of Internal Affairs representatives.
The Head of the European Union Delegation to Georgia, H.E. Ambassador Janos Herman supports the event and will join the event as well.
The World Car Free Day is one day a year that is set aside to try and avoid using cars and cycle, walk or use public transport instead. Car Free Day aims to take the heat off the planet for just one day by encouraging people to be less dependent on their cars and try alternatives. Informal car free days took place throughout the 1990s and the first official, global Car Free Day was launched in 2000. Many big cities close their central roads on this day and fill them with walking and cycling events, and smaller car-free events take place around the world.
