Detailed description (English): World Champion, Olympic Medallist and National Record Holder for the 50km walking race – Rob Heffernan a native of the real capital of Cork will be leading the race. Rob is a community and youth ambassador and will be joined by a number of transition year students to highlight the 2019 European Mobility Week theme “Walk with Us!” - focusing on safe walking and cycling and the ways active mobility can benefit our health and environment.
The public will “Race against Rob” using other low carbon means of transport including cycling, bike hire and public transport. The race will commence at the newly refurbished transport hub at Kent Train Station at 11.30 and will include a number of routes between 5km and 11km around Cork City with the finish at Cork City Library on the Grand Parade.
The route will include crossing the new Mary Elmes pedestrian and cycle-bridge and will highlight the pedestrian and cycle infrastructure upgraded in recent years.
Everyone is welcome to join us for this event on 20th September 2019 as part of our activities during European Mobility Week.
Target group(s): All members of the public who travel regularly in Cork City
Objectives: To have up to 100 participants during the event to experience low carbon travel in Cork City. To raise awareness of the improvements that have been made to low carbon transport and how easy it is to combine low carbon modes of transport for your complete journey.
Expected Outcomes: Reduce the amount of cars in cork city and decrease congestion and thereby improve air quality. Reduce CO2 emissions to assist in meeting Ireland's 2030 targets. Improve the health of our residents.
