Detailed description (English): Bicycle Heroes engages children in solving urban mobility challenges related to cycling as a way of addressing their needs and raising their awareness about the need for, and benefits of, cycling. In this project, children in three partner cities (Dublin, Lisbon, and Rome) will identify the barriers to, and benefits of, active mobility. They will develop and design solutions as part of a design competition which will be exhibited to the public. The children will then oversee the implementation of a selected idea in partnership with key stakeholders. The project will increase awareness, ownership of, and involvement in, mobility challenges and solutions, both for children but also within the broader population. As a result, it will stimulate the uptake of active mobility in general.
Children have a unique perspective on how to solve challenges within our cities. Their needs, when met, make cities safe for other vulnerable groups such as the elderly or disabled and they are effective spokespeople for change given their influence over their families.
This project is supported by EIT Urban Mobility and co-funded by the European Union.
Target group(s): Children (10-14) introduced to cycling and included in design and creation of active mobility solutions.
Objectives: Involve children in the ideation, design, and implementation of active mobility solutions
The output from this initial program will be a scalable, easily distributable and implementable product that can be executed in any city.
Partner: Roma Servizi per la mobilità Dublin city council Trinity College BYCS Bicicultura and the Portuguese Association for Child Safety Promotion (APSI).
