Detailed description (English): Virtual Public Transport (Virtual OV) - A Step Towards Independence
Public transport isn’t always straightforward, especially for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities or psychosocial issues like autism. The overwhelming stimuli and unexpected situations often deter these individuals from using public transport, despite the potential freedom it could offer.
Virtual OV offers a step-by-step approach to independent travel. It provides virtual learning experiences to build confidence for every journey. Discover how Virtual OV can make your travels enjoyable and help you confidently navigate the world.
What can you achieve with Virtual OV? In various scenarios, you’ll learn step-by-step the necessary actions for public transport travel, such as recharging an Chipkaart or checking in and out at gates. Experiencing travel in a safe environment increases confidence in applying these skills independently. The Virtual OV game also contributes to the development of executive functions and helps handle unexpected situations and social challenges often encountered during travel.
How do you use Virtual OV? To use the Virtual OV game on-site, you’ll need a VR headset with the game installed and a tablet for the supervisor to monitor progress.
Virtual OV was developed by Changefied in collaboration with behavioral experts for the Dutch market, but it can be easily adapted to the public transport system of your country.
Target group(s): Primarily designed for people with mild intellectual disabilities or psychosocial issues, Virtual OV simulates everyday travel situations in a game format. Participants can safely experience these scenarios using a VR headset, allowing them to practice and build confidence before applying these skills in real life. However, Virtual OV can also be valuable for other groups, such as first-time public transport users, seniors wishing to maintain mobility, or asylum seekers orienting themselves in a new environment.
