Background
The Millennium Hikers project was launched in 2016 by three French expats living in Seoul, including Catherine GERMIER-HAMEL, Founder and CEO of Millennium Destinations. It was initially designed as a project of the France-Korea Year 2015-2016 celebrating 130 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, with the objective to promote sustainable hiking tourism in France and Korea.
In March 2016, Millennium Hikers was presented at the 9th World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism in Andorra as an online peer-to-peer platform project, aimed at sharing sustainable hiking experiences in Korea and France.
In October 2016, Millennium Hikers was launched in Seoul as an international community of hikers and walkers.
As of today, the group is composed of hundreds of members from Korea and overseas, including members of the diplomatic community in Seoul, representatives of international organizations and corporations, public officers, professionals, journalists, professors, students, etc.
Since then, Millennium Hikers have organized regular and special walking and hiking events in South Korea through several public-private partnerships: Semaine de la Francophonie (annual world celebration of French-speaking) since 2017, Fête du Sport (sports Celebration) in 2018 and 2019, etc.
Korean cities like Ansan, Dasan and PyeongChang in Korea have invited Millennium Hikers to attend special events focused on sustainable tourism, ecotourism, etc.
