Detailed description (English): The Greater Grassmarket Historical Walking Trail.
‘walk:Past, cycle:Past, bus:Past’
Our recently launched Historical Trail will be rebranded for EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK as a 2 kilometre long walking trail through Edinburgh’s Old Town. The trail will be designed to encourage visitors, local residents, local schools and local businesses to get out and ‘walk the past’ …walk:Past. Competitions, scavenger hunts and family friendly activities will be developed with an over-arching theme of walking and car avoidance. We will engage actors to enliven individual aspects of the journey and dress the streets to reinforce the mobility message. Prizes and certificates to emphasise the message will be on offer and available from local businesses.
The focal point will involve the use of the Grassmarket public realm to create a weekend cycle:Past event involving local cycling clubs and bike maintenance businesses promoting cycling and walking. We will also involve Lothian Buses who are anxious to use the Grassmarket as a venue to promote their new cleaner and disability friendly fleet…bus:Past. No street closures will be necessary as the space is available and under-utilised for community events.
Target group(s): Families
Objectives: Promote alternative means of transport
Expected Outcomes: Raise awareness of the need to avoid using cars
