Detailed description (English): How to promote and improve sustainable urban mobility practice, especially addressing commuters? Although many people have a bicycle at home and use it in their free time, most people do not use it to get to work or school. At the same time, increasing journeys made by bike is critical to the climate goals. That is why the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg has initiated and carried out a broad range of activities and programs to promote sustainable transport, encourage companies, organisations and institutions to manage the demand for car use by changing travellers' attitudes and behaviour and reduce emissions.
As part of the RadKULTUR iniative, driven by NVBW - Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg, in 2022, the "PenderBrezel" campaign was carried out for the second time - and again, the response was great and even stronger than the first time. Bike to work and get a free pretzel: More than 650 bakeries throughout the state of Baden-Württemberg participated, more than 130,000 pretzels were handed over the counters within the five days of the campaign. In 2021, the "PendlerBrezel" campaign started within EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK.
Target group(s): Commuters in companies, organisations and institutions - everywhere, in rural areas and in cities, in the state of Baden-Württemberg with around 11 million inhabitants
Objectives: Increasing journeys made by bike is critical to the climate goals. By 2030, cycling should account for 20% of traffic, while pedestrians will make up almost a third. This goal would be met by empowering local authorities, co-funding the infrastructure and fostering a new “cycling culture” amongst citizens. Since 2012, the RadKULTUR initiative has been one of the central measures of the state of Baden-Württemberg in the promotion of a bicycle-friendly mobility culture. The message is this: that it is perfectly possible to be modern and mobile on a bicycle in everyday life.
Right from the beginning in 2021, media and social media reports have shown that the "PendlerBrezel" campaign is extremely successful and receives a high level of approval - which is essential to change attitudes and behaviour or at least start changing attitudes and behaviour. Already in the first week of the campaign, in 2021, the most significant radio station in Baden-Württemberg not only reported about the campaign, but broadcasted a parody on the "PendlerBrezel".
