Detailed description (English): Join us for Norfolk Car-Free Day 2021! For this year’s event the focus is on Play Streets. These are resident-led, temporary closures to motor traffic (often for just a few hours) to create additional safe space for children to play in – giving them a taste of the freedoms that many of us enjoyed in previous generations. It’s not all about the kids though: Play Streets are brilliant at getting adults chatting to each other too, creating community connections that often last long after the road has reverted to normal use.
Previous Play Street events have involved huge chalk drawings, musical performances, scootering, street badminton, basketball, hula-hooping, yoga…you name it! Oh, and cake. Lots of cake!
The deadline for applying for a Play Street on your road for Car-Free Day is August 20th, so get chatting with your neighbours, and get planning! (but it doesn't have to be then - play streets can take place whenever the residents want them!)
Some roads aren't eligible for play streets (such as those on bus routes), but you can still take part in Car-Free Day. If you normally drive, make a note of the day and plan a car-less day - whether it's a walk, a cycle, a local nature hunt, or games in the garden. And if you don't drive, Car-Free Days benefit you too - the more people who choose to forgo the car for the day, the safer our streets, no matter what your mode of transport.
