San Lawrenz organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2017, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
Friday 15th September: Launching of this week by having prominent people (eg. The mayor, councillors, parish priest, etc) from the locality making use of public transport, cycling or going to work on foot thus encouraging the locals to follow their example.

Saturday 16th September: Launching and distribution of an informative leaflet among the whole locality promoting the importance of sharing commuting, using non-car modes as a means of transportation and road safety and awareness.

Sunday 17th September: The Pjazza San Lawrenz, Cangura Street and Trejqet l-10 t’Awissu wil be all closed to traffic to host the 5th edition of Swejjaq. 'Swejjaq' is the Maltese word meaning 'a small market'. The aim of the event is that on Sunday morning, San Lawrenz Square - which has been recently renovated, will be transformed into a small market selling crops, artisan food and other products. There will also be games for children, dance and folk music. The idea is for the square to offer the experience of an artisan market and quality time for the family. This will give encouragement to all citiziens to make intelligent and better use of Public Spaces.

Those present will also have the possibility to get lunch made with sustainable products with the help of local NGO’s.

As part of the event marketing we will encourage people from Malta and Gozo to car pool and use public transport to get to the event. The Local Council will also offer further information and help for those that wish to car pool or even those that wish to register as a large group from different localities to share transportation.

Monday 18th September: A car pooling day will be launched with informative lectures will be given to those that wish to participate. We will have talks on how we as a community can use car pooling as an effective and sustainable method of transportation throughout the year. Those that will be willing to participate will register with the Local Council and an award will be given to those that offer their services most frequently and efficiently.

Tuesday 19th September: A promotional campaign will lead to this day were those that use any means of sustainable transportation such as cycling or public transport, can take a selfie and upload it on the Local Council Facebook page. Those with most ‘likes’ will be awarded.

Wednesday 20th September: Another edition of “Walking to School” will be launched this year. From today, children will be encouraged to walk to school and to join their friends to go to activities such as ‘Skola Sajf’ and other extra curricular activities. At the end of this activity a momentum will be given to the San Lawrenz Primary School for their contribution in the organisation of such activities and for contributing with the local council’s last year initiative in the campaing “Walking to School”.

This initiative which the Local Council introduced in 2014, was set to encourage children not to let their parents to take them to school or to the football nursery by car. There was such a good response for this competition that almost all local children started walking to school.

Thursday 21st September: Today a special seminar will be launched at the Regenerated Square for all the community. A talk will be given by the Mayor on how San Lawrenz will be preparing for the future in regards to the improvement of air quality and the possibility of updating our traffic lanes to facilitate cycling and more ease for the pedestrians. The Mayor shall be taking public suggestions in this open talk and they will be implemented in the next Council meeting.

Afterwards, an expert on nutrition and fitness will be invited to continue the seminar and discuss how the locals can use our present open spaces to include in their fitness routine. Those that require one on one attention will be given special attention after the seminar as well.
