Activities within the week Activities within the week

Gdańsk organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2016, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
The City of Gdansk decided to launch the Mobility Week and award both cyclists and pedestrians on a "Suprise Morning" on Friday the 16th. Cyclists and pedestrians in five different places across the city between 6:30 and 8:30 am were given apples together with invitations to take active part in Mobility Week for example to come to the ZOO on bicycles on the 17th. The special price was offered to people who decide to travel to the ZOO on bicycles on Saturday the 17th. Residents were also invited to take part in Mobility Picnic on the 18th to celebrate sustainable mobility and promote a new space - a street rebuilt to adopt it for pedestrians and close it to traffic. 18th the city of Gdansk organized the Mobility Picnic at Stągiewna Street. This way the residents and tourists were encouraged to visit the new space within the city centre and to re-explore it. Part of the picnic's agenda was a historic walk with a guide who shared the story of Gdansk's transport as well as of the street and its surroundings. Other attractions included blender bikes, running bikes for children, untypical bikes for example constructed to carry 11 persons at ones, or a model for children, allowing them to build their dream city. Also the science centre educators presented experiments presenting the harmfulness of CO2. The Police and City Wardens shared their knowledge on safety. The picnic attracted many visitors, especially during the historic walk and the bicycle acrobatic shows. The entrepreneurs running their business at Stągiewna street were also invited to take active part in the picnic and some offered special prices and food sampling on this occasion.

Further info
The City of Gdansk permanently closed the Stągiewna street for traffic. The street is situated in the historic main town area and as such should be attractive both for tourists and residents with restaurants, shops etc. Until recently the pavements weren't wide enough and the street was dominated by motorised traffic and cars parked alongside. Finally after 5 months of construction work the street became a promenade and became more lively and people friendly. The cars are not allowed anymore and the deliveries come following the set of rules. Within the Mobility Week, on Sunday the 18th the city of Gdansk organized the Mobility Picnic at Stągiewna Street. This way the residents and tourists were encouraged to visit the new space within the city centre and to re-explore it. Part of the picnic's agenda was a historic walk with a guide who shared the story of Gdansk's transport as well as of the street and its surroundings.
