Velika Gorica organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2009, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
Public presentation of the newly installed Automatic air quality monitoring station in the center of Velika Gorica, as a means for monitoring the city climate and air quality.
Visit of school children to the Recycled Estate, a project of NGO Z.M.A.G. (G.N.A.G. - Green Network of Activist Groups), promoting environmentally sound technologies - e.g. composting, green energy (biofuels, wind and solar power), permaculture, ecological building etc.
Organizing of a walking route for school children and other citizens from Velika Gorica to the village Vukovina, for the promotion of the idea of walking instead of using motor vehicles, as a means for improving city climate.
Organizing the "In town without my car" event on September 22nd, as well as a cycling tour to the nearby Landfill and waste management site Mraclinska Dubrava, where the participants shall plant a few trees - a symbolic measure of returning the site to the nature. The participants shall have a guided tour through the site with an accent on the contribution of city life to the air pollution through the disposal and transport of wastes.

Car-free day Car-free day

Velika Gorica carries out a Car-Free Day 2009 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
During the September 22nd "In town without my car" event, Skolska street in Velika Gorica shall be restricted to the motor vehicle traffic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This street - the name translated in English meaning "School street", is a street in front of the two city's primary schools which shall become a stage for many activities during this day, e.g. street dance (famous Croatian dance group Megablast), chalk drawing on the asphalt, a lecture by a policeman on the proper behavior of children in traffic, free round trips on a coach with two horses for the school children, cycling and roller-skating competitions etc. The Mayor announces the start of the cycling tour from Velika Gorica to Mraclinska Dubrava (about 22 km both ways) at 11 a.m.
