Quito organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2012, taking into account the annual theme.

Ride to work day on bike buses
Sep/19, Sep/20 and Sep/21
The idea was to encourage people to ride to their daily activities, in a ‘safer environment’ with groups of people accompanied by more experienced riders. The bike buses were organized to depart from mostly residential areas within the city to the main activity centres leaving at three different times in the morning and returning also at different times in the afternoon.

Quito’s bicycle fair
Sep/21– Sep/23
Representatives of bikeshops, designers, local NGOs and the Municipality participated on this big event encouraging people to ride.

Bicycle gathering on every Local Authority
Sep/23
Competition between the local authorities on which can gather the greatest amount of riders, there were prizes for the winers.


Public lecture: Public participation on the design, building and care of public space: Pedestrian walkways in Quito’
Sep/19 – Sep/20.
With the involvement of the Municipality, NGOs and citizens, the lecture included a workshop where people could discuss ideas to promote more sustainable ways of transport.

With the experience had with 'bike buses' during the mobility week, the Municipality is planning to organize bike buses every friday to encourage people to ride to work, school, etc.

Car-free day Car-free day

Quito carries out a Car-Free Day 2012 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
The main street in 5 local authorities were restricted to the private car, this is where the bicycle gathering events were held.
