Sofia (София) organises activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2012, taking into account the annual theme.

All week
The European mobility week in Sofia is organized under the motto Moving in the right direction. All initiatives aims to provoke citizens to get out of their cars and explore new ways to move through the city – with buss, metro, bicycles, and by walk. A special attention will be given to the children and young people with a lot of educational events for save bicycling in the parks and on the road.

During the week will be presented the campaign of Sofia municipality and the Bulgarian national television – “Stop! Save the children” for more responsible behavior under the wheel especially around the schools and the kinder gardens.

Permanent measures Permanent measures

Sofia (София) implements one or more new permanent measure(s), which contribute(s) to modal transfer from private car to environmentally sound means of transport.

Create or enlarge pedestrian streets
Improvement of infrastructure (new foot bridges, pavements, road crossings, zebra crossings etc)
Public transport services
Improvement and extension of the public transport network (creation of HOV lanes for public transport modes, new stops, new lines, reserved areas etc)
Traffic calming and access control scheme
Speed reduction programmes in zones near schools

Car-free day Car-free day

Sofia (София) carries out a Car-Free Day 2012 and closes off one or more streets to traffic, and opens it to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Zone opened to residents on Car-Free Day:
On 22nd of September the central part of Sofia city will be closed for cars - the streets between Gurko str., bul. Vasssil Levski, Moskovska street and bul. Vitosha.
