Summary
This project is an extension of the work that has been ongoing since the mid 2000:s to connect the housing area of Finninge to the city center of Strängnäs. It is also related to the planning and redevelopment of a new railway station that is being built due to the development of Svealandsbanan. The aim is to develop analysis and design visions for the objectives of travel and accessibility at every stage of walking, cycling and public transport. And make this development co-evolve together with the development of existing and new buildings. The main objective is to create a permeable, attractive and sustainable main street out of a number of selected project areas. The process has been carried out through a number of iterative workshops based on the R&D results of "Four large and twenty small steps" (Ranhagen, 2013) developed within the framework of Sustainable Municipality. The method is based on an initial analysis and extraction of challenges, a subsequent development of future scenarios, an impact assessment of future scenarios and a final strategic phase of implementation. In Strängnäs this where conducted through three main workshops, separate serial vision, interviews and an iterative design work.

The challenges developed during the phase of analysis have been:
• Create resilient and long-term commitment for physical development through a holistic perspective.
• Connect surrounding pedestrian and bicycle routes to Stråket.
• Develop the interface of attractiveness for both transportation and urban design.
• Create sound conditions for sustainable public transport.

The result for meeting these challenges is a vision for a detailed master plan. This master plan is based on eight main strategies:
• Establish a continuous double-sided pedestrian and bicycle street along Stråket.
• Prioritize accessibility for biking and walking in crossings and roundabouts.
• Re-organize and develop smaller neighborhoods and increased number of crossings for stronger east-west connections with Stråket.
• -Focus on good connectivity and accessibility for bikes and pedestrians to railway station.
• Increase the number of entrance points to the city center.
• Transform Källgatan into a strict pedestrian street.
• Identify a number of infill densification areas to strengthen weak streetscapes.
• Develop well defined city entrances, squares and parks.

STRÅKET will contribute to increased energy efficiency by prioritizing soft modes and public transport which is not run by fossil vehicle fuels. It will also contribute to increased energy efficiency through increased density of housing and businesses along the street in a TOD-design where existing infrastructure and land areas can be used more efficiently. This project is part of the Strängnäs municipality participation in the Swedish Energy Agency's R&D Program Sustainable Municipality, more specific in the project area of "Urban planning and design for reduced car dependency in small town development".
