Detailed description (English): The main aim of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra Government regarding its mobility policy is to develop a sustainable mobility prioritizing pedestrian journeys and security. Among the objectives to be achieved is to create safe inhabited environments for pedestrian mobility while facilitating the interaction with other sustainable means of transport.
The railway stretch Vilagarcía de Arousa-Portas, belonging to the line Carril-Pontevedra, falls into disuse in 2008, being decommissioned in 2016. Around this infrastructure, during more than 100 years of continuous use, a dispersed inhabited continuum arose in permanent relationship with it through the existing paths and train stops.
In this context, Provincial Council of Pontevedra and the three local councils crossed by the former train line realize the benefits of its transformation into a communication route reserved exclusively for non-motorised journeys. It would work as the support for a sustainable territorial structuring, developed in an integrated manner, which enhances both the environment and quality of life of the surrounding area.
As a result, Provincial Council of Pontevedra, in collaboration with the three crossed local councils, promotes the construction of a 9.195 m greenway. It became an itinerary of great use and social interest. This greenway is sustainable not only for its direct impact over local inhabitant’s mobility but also for its conception as the recovery of an existing disused infrastructure and its high environmental standards.
