Detailed description (English): Rebel Pedal is Cork’s largest and original Family Fun Cycle through the city, the Rebel Pedal, takes place on Sunday 20th September 2015. This year’s event will commence at the Grand Parade, registration from 11am, with a send off by the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Chris O’Leary at 12pm.
This is a leisurely cycle for all ages, the only stipulation being that children are able and comfortable cycling the distance of 6.5km without stabilisers. The cycle will take in the South Mall continuing down the quays then making its way back to the South Mall via Washington Street with the final leg going down Centre Park Road and ending at the Marina with a post pedal picnic near the Atlantic Pond.
The Rebel Pedal highlights Mobility Week whose theme is to Choose. Change. Combine and marks the seasonal end to the family and fun orientated cycling events with an emphasis on cycling as a sustainable means of transport, including Bike Week in June and the Cycling Festival in July.
The event has been a regular feature since 2000 and each year gets great support from Cork City Council and An Garda Síochána. The Cork Sports Partnership joined this partnership in 2010 when the Rebel Pedal became part of the Rebel Tour initiative. The Rebel Pedal continues to be a fun cycle for the broad community of Cork City whilst the Sports Partnership supports Family Fun Rebel Pedals through clubs throughout the county.
The intention of Rebel Pedal has always been to promote cycling in the city, to bring Cork cyclists together for some fun and to make a safe environment for parents and their children to get on bikes and enjoy the streets of Cork together. Cycling is a fun, healthy and sustainable way of travelling and no doubt the finest way to enjoy the charming sights, sounds and smells of Cork city. There will be a prize this year for the chicest cyclist – so cycle in style to be in with a chance of winning.
The post pedal picnic and entertainment will as is customary take place at the Atlantic Pond. The Entertainment will include music from “Good Rain”, Bike workshops, Face-painting etc. we also encourage people to bring along Frisbees, balls and other outdoor games. Cycling outlets in the City support the annual raffle and the unique EcoBus will be there to provide refreshments for those not bringing their own picnic.
